Banisteriopsis caapi is the classical ingredient in traditional ayahuasca recipes, it contains the active components Harmine and Harmaline. These substance are MAO-inhibitors and prevent the liver from destroying the DMT and thus making it orally active. But even if its most popular usage is as part of ayahuasca, this vine is also active on its own.

The substances within Banisteriopsis caapi have antidepressant, euphoric and intoxicating effects. Banisteriopsis caapi its used orally in tea preparations.

Oral:

In both cases, if used pure or as ingredient of Ayahuasca the vine is cooked for 30-40 minutes in water. Afterwards the plant material is filtered and the tea is ready for consumption.

Dosage:

An average dosage of Banisteriopsis caapi is set between 40-50 grams of the dried vine, no matter if used as ayahuasca ingredient or on its own.

Important notes:

Since Banisteriopsis caapi is a MAO-inhibitor, any further consumption of medicine, drugs or alcohol should be avoided. The effects could lengthen each other, affect the intensity to an unknown extend and in the worst case they could be even dangerous for the health.
